BY MIDAFTERNOON, Running Wolf and his tired pinto needed water. He had left a trail he believed would give no indication of his intended direction of travel. He knew the following warriors would need water as bad as he did. This time of year, the only water was running down the Seeds-Kee-Dee. He made one last jog to the east, hoping they would believe he was riding away from the river. He then cut back to the northwest. He would hit the river just a few miles south of the Antelope Bluffs. He hoped the Blackfeet would need water bad enough they would give up their pursuit of him and turn back to the river. It was a hope that he knew only time would prove.

He slid out of his saddle and led the exhausted horse the last mile to the river, but while still on top of the river’s break, movement caught his eye. There were men and horses in the water. Was this the Blackfeet pursuing him? Had they given up catching him to head to the river for water? He studied them for a few moments but could not tell who they were. Another mile to the north he could see a thick stand of cottonwoods, and staying back from the break far enough he couldn’t see the river, he headed north to the cottonwoods.

As he led the tired horse, he thought about the men he believed were on his trail. He had not seen them, but he knew they were back there, he could feel their presence. He believed that if they had gone to the river before him, they would have been much further to the south.

Was this the Blackfeet chasing Ely? Had they caught him and were now celebrating? Ely could be in serious trouble, staked out for their torture, or even already dead. With renewed energy Running Wolf urged his horse to a trot as he jogged along, reaching the river at the cottonwoods in just a few more tiring minutes.

After quenching their thirsts in the refreshing water, he tied his exhausted pinto behind a large bunch of wild plum bushes. The horse couldn’t be seen from the river, and he believed he would be safe.

Running Wolf moved silently through the brush along the river as he headed south. Concerned about Ely, but knowing if he were caught, he would not be able to help his friend. Although he wasn’t thinking about his own safety, he was cautious, trained by a lifetime of living with the dangers of the wilderness. He moved with the stealth of a mountain lion, as he got closer to the men.

He was on his belly looking through the branches of a sage. They were out of the water, and he could plainly see they were Blackfeet. It was their leader he watched; the impressive, formidable looking painted warrior. Running Wolf watched his actions as he pointed and talked to his men. It took only moments for Running Wolf to believe Ely had escaped capture.
